Sustainability at The Cottage at Windsong Farm
Welcome to Windsong Farm!
At Windsong Farm we strive to give every person and every animal that lives or visits here a quality experience. Our farming philosophy, guest accommodation business and personal lifestyle are united by the desire to treat this planet and each of its creatures with respect and to honour their well-being.
Our farm is a work in progress as are most farms. Once a sheep farm, we began transforming Windsong Farm to a deer and cattle finishing operation in 2004. Deer fencing was installed, yards altered, and new paddocks drilled. The old sheep paddock around you was fenced off and some of the first of hundreds of pittosporums, hebes and ribbonwoods were planted. Each year we make progress and learn how our efforts and practices allow for the farm operations to improve, the animals to live a better life while with us, and the plants to thrive and grow. We aim to improve our businesses while also improving the environment around us through sustainable farming practices, responsible tourism initiatives, and personal lifestyle choices.
We invite you to consider some of the sustainable initiatives we have implemented here and welcome learning about others from you.
- Our appliances are selected for low water usage.
- Our light bulbs are low energy light bulbs.
- We recycle newspapers and use them to mulch the trees and gardens.
- We grow most of our own produce and grow our own meat!
- We compost organic waste to use in our gardens.
- We use Enjo cleaning cloths and primarily natural cleaning products.
- Our gardens are designed to offer fruit and flowers for all birds, but especially to attract the native species from nearby Oxford Forest.
Windsong Farm is a beautiful spot in a spectacular country. We welcome you to this small corner of New Zealand where we feel fortunate to live. We hope that your stay here will be relaxing, rejuvenating and interesting. It is our desire that your visit will be memorable for the experiences you have, the beauty you see around you, and the good company you share.
